Photographing family puts a little extra pressure on me. I know them so well that I really want to create something that feels like them. But that’s also what makes it so much fun.
This time, it was my niece, Hailey.
I’ve photographed a lot of high school seniors over the years, but with Hailey I already knew the personality behind the pictures. So instead of figuring out who she was during the session, it was about bringing that out in front of the camera.
We started at a few of my favorite urban locations around the Green Bay area, using brick, old doorways, metal stairs and some spots you might drive past every day without giving them a second thought. That’s one of my favorite parts of senior photography, finding those little pockets around Green Bay that can become something completely different through the camera. Move 20 feet, change the light or switch the angle, and you have a whole new look.
From there, we traded brick and steel for tall grass, wildflowers and some great late-summer light. The white dress against all that green, with the sun dropping behind her, ended up being some of my favorite images from the night.
What you can’t tell from the photos is that we were being absolutely eaten alive by mosquitoes in that field. Apparently they also thought Hailey’s senior session was worth showing up for. :)
Somehow, she still looks completely relaxed in the photos. Meanwhile, between shots, I’m pretty sure we were both swatting mosquitoes like crazy.
Sometimes the prettiest locations come with a price.
By the end, we had everything from simple portraits to a few that were a little more playful, and it all still felt like Hailey.
That’s always my goal with senior pictures. I don’t want every senior to leave with the same photos in different clothes. The locations, lighting and posing should fit the person I’m photographing.
And in this case, I’m glad I got to do that for my niece.
It’s still a little hard to believe she’s already a senior.
Frievalt Photography specializes in high school senior pictures in Green Bay and throughout Northeast Wisconsin, including De Pere, Ashwaubenon, Howard and Suamico.
Where can we take senior pictures in Green Bay?
There are lots of options around the Green Bay area, from urban locations with brick, stairs and architectural details to fields, parks and natural areas. I help each senior choose locations based on the look they want for their session.
Can we do urban and outdoor senior pictures in the same session?
Yes. Hailey’s session is a good example. We started with urban locations around Green Bay and finished with tall grass, wildflowers and late-summer light. Using different locations gives you a lot of variety in your final gallery.
Do you help seniors with posing?
Yes. You don’t need to know what to do in front of the camera. I guide you through posing throughout the session, but I also want the photographs to feel natural and fit your personality.
What should I wear for senior pictures?
I recommend bringing different looks so we can match outfits to locations. Something casual, something dressier and outfits with different colors or textures can give us several different looks during one senior session.
When is the best time for senior pictures in Green Bay?
Summer through early fall is popular because we have longer evenings, green locations and later sunsets. The best time depends on the look you want, activities you’re involved in and when you need your senior pictures.
